Hope Furnace

Overlooking the Haunted Furnace

The Town of Hope Furnace was a company town that came into existance during the operation of the furnace (1854 – 1874)  that you can see across State Route 278. The furnace was fired by coal or charcoal and used to smelt iron ore. A town to house workers was hastily built around it. There were once small homes, a school and general store in the town.

You may have heard about the furnace worker who fell to his death within Hope Furnace. His lantern is said to be seen wavering at the top of the furnace at night.
