Is Vinton County a ‘spirited’ place of long-ago Native Americans and their remaining mounds? A haunted railroad tunnel where the apparitions of at least two long-gone people have been experienced? And in the Village of Zaleski there is a “house with a history,” where “Grandma” and sometimes “Grandpa” greet their beloved granddaughter and an occasional Guest.
Stairway House is a large, late-Victorian house that was a long-time home to a village family for many years of the 20th century. The granddaughter of this family still lives in Zaleski, and as a child, lived for several years in this house with her grandparents. Over the past couple of decades a number of other families occupied the house until Historic Host ‘Vacations with History,’ acquired and restored it in 2007.
This same lady is now Hostess and Housekeeper for vacationing Guests at Stairway House. During the first season of operation at least two Guests reported experiencing other “persons” there; and one who claimed to be a Medium, saw a “very short lady” cross the back yard one night and enter the house behind hers. The next morning she discussed this experience with the Hostess, who told her that “Grandma” had been a very short lady and often visited her best friend in the house behind. (This house has been empty for some time.) Our Hostess says she herself often talks with Grandma, who one day told her that “she likes how the little lady who laughs a lot had decorated the house.” “Grandpa” also occasionally appears to our Hostess, but not as often as Grandma. Grandma apparently enjoys having friendly and pleasant Guests enjoy her former home!
Historic Host also offers more historic lodging including a restored school house!
